Grammar Focus: Modals of Deduction (must, can't, might)

Modals of deduction express how certain we are about something, based on evidence.

  • must — almost 100% certain it IS true (positive deduction): He must be rich; he drives a Ferrari.
  • can't — almost 100% certain it is NOT true (negative deduction): He can't be rich; he drives an old car.
  • might — possible, but not certain (~50%): He might be rich; I don't know for sure.
