Grammar Focus: Gerunds and Infinitives
A gerund is the -ing form used as a noun; an infinitive is to + base verb.
- Verbs + gerund: enjoy, avoid, finish, mind, suggest, consider, keep: I enjoy reading books.
- Verbs + infinitive: want, decide, offer, hope, plan, agree, learn: She decided to study abroad.
- Either, with a change of meaning: stop to do (pause in order to) vs stop doing (finish); remember to do (obligation) vs remember doing (recall).
- Either, no change: like, love, hate, start, begin, continue, prefer.
