Grammar Focus: Mixed Conditionals
Mixed conditionals combine two time frames in one hypothetical sentence.
- Type 1 — Past condition -> Present/Future result. Form: If + Past Perfect, would + base verb. If a company had invested in training years ago, they would be enjoying greater success today. (They didn't invest; result affects now.)
- Type 2 — Present condition -> Past result. Form: If + Past Simple, would have + past participle. If I were more careful, I wouldn't have made that mistake yesterday. (A general/present trait; result is in the past.)
Use were for all subjects in the present (Type 2) condition.
