Lesson 44: The Legend of Fairies

What does "Folklore" mean?
The Legend of Fairies
For centuries, people had believed in fairies. These magical creatures had appeared in folklore and stories long before anyone had written them down. My grandmother had told me many fairy tales when I was a child, and she had heard them from her own grandmother.
Where Fairies Lived
According to ancient legends, fairies had lived in hidden places, deep within forests or under hills. They had built their homes in secret, far from human eyes. Before humans had started building cities, the world had been full of untouched nature, which had provided perfect homes for these tiny beings. Many people had claimed to have seen them, especially in rural areas where nature had remained wild.
What Fairies Did
Fairies had often been described as mischievous but sometimes helpful. They had played tricks on humans, like hiding keys or making milk go sour. However, they had also helped those who had been kind to them. For example, if a poor farmer had left a bowl of milk outside, the fairies had sometimes helped with the harvest. Before the industrial revolution, when life had been simpler, these stories had been a big part of everyday life.
The Decline of Belief
By the 20th century, belief in fairies had started to fade. As science had advanced and cities had grown, the magical world of fairies had seemed less real. The places where they had once lived had been replaced by roads and buildings. However, the stories they had inspired have remained, reminding us of a time when the world had been a more magical place.
