Grammar Focus: Comparative Adjectives
Comparative adjectives compare two nouns and show which has more of a quality. They are usually followed by than.
- Short adjectives (one syllable): add -er: tall -> taller than, big -> bigger than.
- Adjectives ending in -y: change -y to -ier: happy -> happier than, busy -> busier than.
- Long adjectives (two+ syllables): use more before the adjective: beautiful -> more beautiful than, expensive -> more expensive than.
- Irregular: good -> better than, bad -> worse than, far -> farther/further than.
