Grammar Focus: Superlative Adjectives
Superlative adjectives compare three or more nouns and show which has the highest degree of a quality. They are usually preceded by the.
- Short adjectives (one syllable): add -est: tall -> the tallest, big -> the biggest.
- Adjectives ending in -y: change -y to -iest: happy -> the happiest, busy -> the busiest.
- Long adjectives (two+ syllables): use the most: beautiful -> the most beautiful, exciting -> the most exciting.
- Irregular: good -> the best, bad -> the worst, far -> the farthest/furthest.
