Grammar Focus: Adjectives ending in '-ed' and '-ing'

Many adjectives can end in -ed or -ing, with different meanings.

  • -ing adjectives (interesting, boring, exciting) describe the thing or person that causes the feeling: The book is interesting.
  • -ed adjectives (interested, bored, excited) describe how a person feels: I am interested in the book.

Common pairs: amazing/amazed, boring/bored, exciting/excited, fascinating/fascinated, inspiring/inspired, surprising/surprised, tiring/tired, satisfying/satisfied, confusing/confused.
