Grammar Focus: Past Perfect Simple
The Past Perfect Simple talks about an action that happened before another past action or a specific past time. Form: had + past participle (V3).
- Action before another past action: These creatures had appeared in folklore long before anyone had written them down.
- Action before a specific past time: By the 20th century, belief in fairies had started to fade.
Time words: before, after, by the time, when, already, just, never.
