Grammar Focus: Relative Clauses (Defining)

A defining relative clause gives essential information that tells us which person or thing we mean. It uses relative pronouns:

  • who — for people: People who practice sustainable living focus on reducing waste.
  • which — for things: Homes which are powered by solar panels are more common.
  • that — for people or things (informal): choices that help protect the planet.
  • where — for places: This is the house where I grew up.

We can omit who/which/that when they are the object of the clause: the food (that) we eat.
