Grammar Focus: Comparatives and Superlatives

Comparatives and superlatives compare two or more things.

  • Comparatives (compare two) — short adjectives add -er (faster, smaller); long adjectives use more (more important, more expensive); irregular: good -> better, bad -> worse, far -> farther/further. Followed by than.
  • Superlatives (compare three or more, with the) — short adjectives add -est (the fastest); long adjectives use the most (the most effective); irregular: good -> the best, bad -> the worst.
